In each family law case, the Court requires parties to attend mediation. Mediation is a semi-formal process that includes you, your attorney (if you have one), a certified mediator, and the opposing party along with the opposing party’s attorney (if he or she has one). The parties can sit in the same room or be separated. The mediation process allows the parties to negotiate each of their terms or conditions prior to involving the Court’s intervention. Each of the counties has a mediation department or you can have a private mediator at your request. In general, mediation is a confidential, non-adversarial approach to conflict resolution, empowering parties to formulate, resolve and problem-solve to agree to the best outcome.
